she sang.

My dad drove with me out to Linden, Tx for kyndall mae's 1st birthday party a few weeks ago.

Just me, dad and oak.
Dads truck.
Coffee.
2 hours of road ahead of us.
Gotta pee real bad 10 min. into drive.
Oak is out cold.

Dad and I are a lot alike.  We are SLOW, DEEP thinkers, and SLOW PROCESSORS.
I have probably heard dad tell the story of his accident 50+ times in the past 4 months.
But as we were driving, I was overwhelmed with the thought....

"Thank You, Lord.   Thank you that I can listen to my dad tell this story, again.  Thank you that he CAN process this.  Yes, Thank You, Lord.  I am thrilled to listen, again."

The thing is....every once in a while, I will learn something new about the story.  And that day as dad was saying,
"I was strapped down so tight, and couldn't move...the Dr. came in and said, 'Mr. Brawner, we need to talk.'  I said,  "Yes, but my hip really hurts, what did you find on the x-ray?"

'Mr. Brawner, I don't know about that x-ray on your hip, but we need to talk...
Mr. Brawner, your neck is broken.'
"What?  I immediately started moving my fingers...."

Dad continued talking but my mind went elsewhere...
Mom.
What did mom do?  I had never asked.

"Dad, what did mom do when the Dr. said your neck was broken."

Tears in his eyes he said, "She sang."

"What? She sang? What did she sing?"

"Hymns.  And she prayed over me."

We continued talking and processing and marveling God's goodness and kindness in our lives.

Later on that day, I asked mom about her singing.
"Dad said you sang, what did you sing?"

Immediately tears filled her eyes, "'On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.'  It's all I could think of.  I just got down in his face, and it's all I could do.  He was in so much pain.  I just sang, and then he sang with me."

SO, they just found out his neck is broken, and have no idea what that means or what the future holds- but they are in a tiny Emergency Room in tiny-town Colorado, mom is leaning over dads face, holding him, and together, they are singing, "On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand."

Sweetest.picture.in.my.head.ever.

But when I think about it, I'm not surprised at all.
Of course she sang.
She always sings.
Doing laundry.
Waking us up in the morning.
Driving down the road.
To the cows.
To Harley.
To nobody.
Getting a point across. (her preference is through song.)
Cooking Dinner.
Teaching Sunday School and Kindergarden.
In the Shower.
She just sings.

And her choice of song in that moment?
On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand.
Man, the woman lives what she believes, through and through.

"...Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." Luke 6:45

Holding my dad in an Emergency Room.
She sings.

  2. That's a really great perspective Laura - she is a testiment of what we should all be. When I first met your parents (we stayed at their house for ou/tx years ago) I remember your mom singing around the house. :)

  3. Thanks Laura. All those years she used to tell us she couldn't sing but we knew better. Not only does she have a daughter with a beautiful voice, but she has one also with a spirit to match. Wish I could have seen you both a couple of weeks ago!
